Can respond to commonly used greetings. Can respond correctly to simple questions (Ex: What's your name?)
Understands and responds correctly to classroom instructions.
When speaking, uses short sentences or single word responses. Cannot sustain conversation.
Using limited vocabulary, can respond to set phrases and greetings correctly. Poor listening comprehension, often misunderstands what is being said. Cannot correctly apply grammar. Resorts to gestures and repetition to communicate.
Currently studying English, more than 2 but less than 4 years of private instruction (eikaiwa, tutor, etc.)
Mastery of commonly used greetings, including variations.
Can respond correctly to questions that use common and/or simple vocabulary.
Using common and/or simple vocabulary, can express their own feelings and experiences.
When speaking, uses short sentences or single word responses, but can manage simple, short conversations.
Can memorize and recite songs, poems, and short passages.
Can apply larger vocabulary and phrases accurately. Can express their feelings clearly. Responses to questions are more accurate, but grammar and word selection mistakes are common. With large gaps in expressive ability, still uses lots of gestures and body language to communicate.
Currently studying English, more than 4 years of private instruction (eikaiwa, tutor, etc.). Can understand English-language staff instructions without difficulty.
Can initiate and maintain conversations on a variety of topics.
Can accurately respond to questions even if format of question is new or unfamiliar.
